Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s football team will certainly be battle tested by the time district play begins.
The Lions are 0-3, but have faced nothing but ranked teams thus far. That trend continues on Friday when Class 1A ninth-ranked Western Christian visits Rock Rapids.
Western Christian has been one of the stingiest teams in the region despite playing a fairly strong schedule itself to start the year. The Wolfpack has given up just seven points in its three games combined. The only touchdown surrendered came in a 34-7 over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, which was ranked ninth in Class 2A at the time. Last week Western Christian blanked traditional power Sioux City Heelan 10-0.
Junior Tristan Mulder leads the Wolfpack defense in tackles with 22.5, including three tackles for loss and a sack. The Wolfpack has five interceptions as a team, two of them by senior Jacob Verburg. The team has also recovered three fumbles.
Senior Kobi Baccam has found various ways to make an impact on offense. He leads the team with 109 rushing yards and has one touchdown on the ground. He also leads the team with eight receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Baccam also serves as the team’s kicker and is 8-for-8 in point-after conversion kicks and 3-for-3 in field goals.
Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s opponents thus far have been Class 1A fifth-ranked West Lyon, Class 1A top-ranked West Sioux and Class 2A fourth-ranked Spirit Lake.
Junior Kalen Meyer is the Lions’ leading rusher with 109 yards. Central Lyon has used three players at the quarterback spot as it tries to replace longtime starter Lucas Nagel, who graduated last year. Senior Colby Postma has the most passing attempts with 20. He’s thrown for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Meyer heads up the defense as well with 12 tackles. Senior Addison Metzger has 10 stops. The Lions could use more big plays on that side of the ball as the team has created just one turnover thus far.
In other N’West Iowa sports this week, a rivalry bout in the Siouxland Conference has Class 3A 11th-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley visiting Class 3A 12th-ranked Sioux Center on Thursday.
In cross country, one of the bigger meets locally is always the Sheldon Invitational, which has been moved to the Risefest grounds this year. That meet will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
