Featured Game: Week 8

Playoffs. We’re talking about playoffs. Are you kiddin’ me?

No. No we are not.

As we enter Week 8 of the high school football season, the path to the postseason is growing more and more clear for area teams. This week features a huge game in Class 2A District 1.

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock is 3-4 overall and 3-0 in district play. The Lions have won three straight after starting the season 0-4.

They’re coming off a convincing 39-0 win at home against Okoboji.

Their task this week is to find a way to win at 10th-ranked Sioux Center. The Warriors are 5-2 overall and also 3-0 in the district.

Sioux Center wasn’t great in Week 7 but was good enough to beat MOC-Floyd Valley 21-8.

The winner of this game takes control of the district with one game left in the season.

Kole Telford, the senior running back for the Lions, has rushed for 279, 133 and 167 yards in the three district wins.

His rushing attack has helped spark an offense that totaled just 39 points in its four non-district games. The Lions have scored 41, 31 and 39 points in their three district appearances.

The defense has also found its groove. After allowing a whopping 166 points in those first four games, teams have managed just 22 in the three district affairs.

Sioux Center is led by a stingy defense. That unit has given up 30 points in district play thus far. Matthew Bomgaars leads the defense with 40.5 tackles while Jack Vogel has 37.5.

Offensively, the Warriors prefer to keep the chains moving via the rushing attack. Sam Vonk has carried 109 times for 632 yards. He averages 5.8 yards per carry and has scored nine touchdowns on the ground.

Damon Walhof has proven to be efficient when passing. He has completed 53.8 percent of his passing attempts for 515 yards. He’s thrown six touchdowns and three interceptions.

Eli Hibma is Walhof’s top target. Hibma has 18 receptions for 231 yards and two scores.

For what it’s worth, the Lions won last year’s meeting 14-7.

Conference titles will be decided in cross country this week. The War Eagle Conference meet is scheduled for today (Monday) at 4:30 p.m. in Marcus. The Lakes will also run its conference meet today (Monday) at 4:30 in Storm Lake. The Siouxland Conference meet is scheduled for Tuesday at Sibley.

This is also the final week of preparation for area volleyball teams prior to the regional tournament beginning next week.
