Three members of the Sioux Center Storm hockey program are competing at the national level this weekend in Denver, CO.
Aubrey Cannegieter, Hope Vander Zwaag and Mackinzie Van Voorst made South Dakota girls teams that are competing in the USA Hockey Tier II national tournaments. The events started on Thursday and will run until Monday.
The South Dakota 16 and under team consists of 20 girls from 10 communities. Cannegieter is on that team.
The South Dakota 19 and under team is made up of 15 players from seven different communities, including Vander Zwaag and Van Voorst.
Players skate for their local hockey associations during the regular season, then the competitors become teammates as Team South Dakota is formed. The players had to participate in over 20 games in fall and winter to qualify. The South Dakota teams that are playing in the national tournament have been together since the middle of March.
At nationals, teams from 11 state compete in three rounds of pool play. The top teams from each pool advance to the championship round. The single-elimination portion of the tournament starts Sunday. The championship match is on Monday.
The South Dakota 16-and-under team opened with a 4-1 win over the Central New York Bobcats on Thursday. It beat the New Jersey Colonials 7-0 on Friday and will finish pool play today (Saturday, May 1) against the Rocky Mountain Roughriders of Colorado.
The South Dakota 19-and-under team got started with a 5-4 win over the San Diego Angels on Thursday. The team lost to the Philadelphia Junior Flyers of Pennsylvania 6-1. South Dakota faces the Florida Alliance today.
The spring sports season in N’West Iowa is a short one and is already nearing its close.
In track and field, the War Eagle Conference meet is Monday in Hartley, the Siouxland Conference meet is on Thursday in Sibley and the Lakes Conference meet is on Thursday in Hull. The state-qualifying meets are a week later on Thursday, May 13. Sioux Center, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and Sioux Center are among the Class 3A teams gathering in Orange City for that competition. West Sioux is hosting the Class 2A state-qualifier with Central Lyon, Okoboji, Sheldon, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Unity Christian, West Lyon and Western Christian among the field there. Gehlen Catholic, George-Little Rock, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, South O’Brien and Trinity Christian will be at the 1A meet hosted by Lawton-Bronson.
The boys golf sectional tournaments begin on Thursday, May 13 as well, though many of the meets will be played the following day. MOC-Floyd Valley and Sioux Center are at the Class 3A meet in Spencer on Thursday. Class 2A teams in the region are split up, with Okoboji hosting a meet on Thursday, May 13. Central Lyon hosts a sectional the next day. Boyden-Hull, Rock Valley, Sibley-Ocheyedan, West Lyon, West Sioux and Western Christian are among the teams joining the Lions that day. Unity Christian and Sheldon are in a group playing at Sheldon on Friday, May 14.
The girls regional golf tournaments begin on May 17.
Postseason play in boys soccer begins May 20.
