Titans times two
The Tri-State Titans fast-pitch softball group won a 14-and-under state title at the Iowa Games that I wrote about last week and it added the 18-and-under Iowa Games title by winning a tournament last Saturday in Ames.
The Titans won three times in pool play and twice in the championship bracket. The team outscored its foes by a combined 60-10 in the tournament and batted .515 as a team.
N’West Iowans who were a part of the championship team included Charli Bomgaars of Boyden-Hull, Taryn Hintz of South O’Brien, Shady Blankenship of West Sioux, Payton Schwiesow of West Sioux, Hannah Dau of South O’Brien, Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag of Boyden Hull and Meghan Danielson of West Sioux.
A pair of former N’West Iowa football standouts have been selected to the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the best defensive football player in the NCAA FCS Subdivision.
University of South Dakota senior defensive end Darin Greenfield is a 2015 graduate of Sheldon High School. Greenfield has been an All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first-team selection in each of his two years as a full-time starter for the Coyotes. He was second in the league with 14.5 tackles for loss in the regular season. Greenfield finished last season with 55 tackles, six sacks, 13 quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles.
