The fall sports season has wrapped up around the state and a few N’West Iowa high school athletes left an impression with their performances.
The Iowa Girls Coaches Association has released its all-state volleyball lists for 2019 and the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association has named its all-state football squads.
Wolfpack leads way
The volleyball lists were of course headlined by Class 2A state champion Western Christian.
The Wolfpack’s Tammi Veerbeek was the Class 2A Coach of the Year.
Western Christian seniors Olivia Granstra and Macay Van’t Hul made the all-state first-team list. Western Christian senior Tori Wynja was on the second team and senior Makenna Kooima was on the third team. The honorable mention list in Class 2A included Central Lyon senior Kiley Metzger and Boyden-Hull senior Brooke Zylstra.
Two N’West Iowa players, MOC-Floyd Valley junior Jazlin De Haan and Unity Christian freshman Gracie Schoonhoven, were on the all-state third-team list in Class 3A.
Gehlen Catholic senior Sydney Livermore was on the all-state second-team list in Class 1A. Her teammate, senior Chloe Bunkers, received honorable mention.
Gridders earn respect
The Class A football list saw South O’Brien senior Tristan Wilson made the first team as an offensive back. Wolverines senior Noah Fuhrman was on the second team as an offensive lineman and senior Darien Keith was on the second-team defensive line. South O’Brien senior Thomas Nelson was on the third team as an offensive lineman.
In Class 1A, the first-team list included West Sioux senior Hunter Dekkers at quarterback, West Sioux senior Kade Lynott at wide receiver/tight end, West Lyon junior Jordan VerMeer on the offensive line, West Lyon senior Jordan De Smet on the offensive line, West Lyon senior Logan Meyer as an offensive back, Western Christian junior Levi Vanden Bos as a defensive lineman, West Lyon senior Jalyn Gramstad as a defensive back, West Lyon senior Gavin Lorenzen as a kick returner and West Lyon senior Davion Sterner as an at-large selection.
The Class 1A second team included West Sioux senior Bryce Coppock as a wide receiver/tight end, West Sioux junior Jason Topete as a kicker, Western Christian senior Eli Van Ginkel as a defensive lineman, West Lyon senior Gauge Erickson as a linebacker and West Sioux senior Seth Salker as an at-large selection. The all-state third-team list had Unity Christian senior Jacob Dragstra as a defensive lineman and Western Christian senior Kobi Baccam as a defensive back.
In Class 2A, Sioux Center senior Damon Walhof made the first team as a punter, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock junior Dylan Winkel was on the second team as a defensive lineman, MOC-Floyd Valley senior Michael Ruden was on the second team as a defensive back, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley senior Josh Heitritter was on the third team as a wide receiver/tight end, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley senior Brandon Roemeling was on the third team as an offensive lineman, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock senior Jarrett Meyer was on the third team as an offensive lineman and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock sophomore Cooper Spiess was on the third team as a defensive back.
