SIOUX CENTER—Sioux Center News came away with three awards during the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2020 Iowa Better Newspaper Contests awards banquet Friday, Feb. 7, in Des Moines.
Sioux Center News competes in Weekly Class III, which is for newspapers with a circulation of 1,551 and above. It is the largest category for weekly papers in Iowa.
This year’s awards were judged by the Virginia Press Association.
Staff writer Renee Wielenga earned third-place in the master columnist category. The paper won second place in the best special section — editorial category and in best ad featuring miscellaneous.
Sioux Center News is owned by Iowa Information Publishers and Printers of Sheldon and has been part of the family-owned company’s fold since 2015. The Wagner family of Sibley and Sheldon own Iowa Information.
“Like the rest of our publications, Sioux Center News is dedicated to telling hyperlocal stories that matter to its readers,” said Iowa Information managing editor Ty Rushing. “I’m proud of the team there for its INA success and I want to give a special shout-out to Renee on penning her award-winning columns. I recognize how strong her voice is in her column writing and it’s pretty cool to see others acknowledge that strength as well.”
Iowa Information president Jeff Wagner echoed Rushing’s thoughts.
“It’s nice for the staff to be honored for all the work they do,” he said. “We don’t do this for the awards, but we do appreciate others recognizing the quality local journalism we strive to continuously put out as a company.”
