SIOUX CENTER—As part of the new 2019-20 school year starting Friday, Aug. 23, the Sioux Center Christian School welcomes new staff. Here’s a glance at who they are:

Marissa Westra, first-grade teacher

Q: What makes you excited about this role?

A: I am excited to be a part of the Christian school faculty as a teacher this year. I was a paraprofessional at SCCS last year and enjoyed working with many different teachers and students. I am looking forward to having my own classroom again. I am excited to teach and expose my students to new ideas and knowledge as well as continue to build on the skills that they have learned in previous grades. I also am looking forward to the joy and excitement first-graders bring to the classroom. They keep each day different and find joy in the little things that can happen in a school day.

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: I enjoy reading, running, being outside and spending time with friends and family.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the community?

A: I grew up in Edgerton, MN. After attending Dordt College, I taught at Sioux Falls Christian School for four years as a kindergarten teacher. I moved to the Sioux Center area last year after marrying my husband, Kyle Westra.

Leah Mouw, school counselor

Q: What makes you excited about this role?

A: I’m excited to work with the Sioux Center Christian staff. I love the opportunity to walk with students through some difficult situations or transitions in their lives and being able to incorporate my faith into my counseling.

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: I love to hang out with my family and friends, run and go to the gym.

Lori DeJong, fifth- through eighth-grade art

Q: What makes you excited about this role?

A: First of all, I love the creative process so I am excited to share my passion for the visual arts with the middle school kids. My hope is that they will embrace their identities as creative kids with the ability to share their stories through the arts.

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: I like to go run (especially on the trail through the Dordt prairie). I love to hang out with my kids and husband. And of course I love to paint!

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the community?

A: I have been teaching in my studio (The Imagination Studio) since 2015 and will continue to teach a few studio classes through the year.

Rebecca De Vries, fifth- through eighth-grade general music

Q: What makes you excited about this role?

A: While I’ve taught at Sioux Center Christian before and at the middle school level before, this will be my first time teaching music. I am eager to learn and create alongside students and help them discover the joy music can bring to their lives.

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: I enjoy gardening, spending time with my family and friends, cooking, and all kinds of music.
