Family given support after house fire

One way to support the family is that ATLAS of Sioux Center has set up an account at American State Bank in Sioux Center to receive donations that will mostly be used to help the Vargas family set up a home when that time comes.

SIOUX CENTER—Two ways have been set up to help support a family who lost their home in a Jan. 9 fire.

Imelda Mejia-Vargas and her three daughters — Adlemi, a freshman at Western Christian High School in Hull; Madeli, a sixth-grader at Sioux Center Christian School; and Melani, a third-grader at Sioux Center Christian — lost everything, including their two pet dogs.

Mejia-Vargas works as a cook and custodian Sioux Center Christian.

“Thank you to all who have reached out to quickly help Imelda and the girls — clothing and many generous gift cards have already been received and are a blessing to them as they take care of immediate needs,” said head of school Josh Bowar.

He said the family is living with Mejia-Vargas’s brother in Sioux Center while the insurance company processes the claim on their home.

One way to support the family is that ATLAS of Sioux Center has set up an account at American State Bank in Sioux Center to receive donations that will mostly be used to help the Vargas family set up a home when that time comes. Donations are tax-deductible. Checks are payable to ATLAS, with “Mejia-Vargas family” in the memo or can be made out to “Imelda Mejia-Vargas.”

Donations may be dropped off at American State Bank in Sioux Center, ATLAS of Sioux Center, Sioux Center Christian School or Western Christian.

Sioux Center Christian has also set up a Day of Giving for the family. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Culver’s in Sioux Center will donate 10 percent of the day’s sales and all donations received to Mejia-Vargas and her daughters.

“Thank you again for the outpouring of support we are seeing from the SCCS community for this family,” Bowar said. “Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus.”
