SUTHERLAND—Shirley A. Jurgensen, age 91, of Sutherland, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, at MercyOne Primghar Medical Center in Primghar, Iowa.
Her services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet, Iowa, with Pastor Kristy May and Pastor William Nielsen officiating.
Burial will be in the Liberty Township Cemetery in Calumet, Iowa.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, with family present 5-7 p.m., at the Eldridge Family Funeral Home in Paullina, Iowa.
Arrangements are under the care of the Eldridge Family Funeral Home in Paullina.

Shirley Ann Jurgensen, the daughter of William and Anna (Westphal) Nielsen, was born Feb. 1, 1928, near Paullina, Iowa. She attended Dale #8 grade school north of Paullina and later graduated from Paullina High School in 1946. She graduated from Iowa School of Cosmetology in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1947. She was employed at Ann’s Beauty Shop in Paullina for 10 years. On June 27, 1948, she was united in marriage to Vernelle Jurgensen in Paullina, Iowa. After her husband’s discharge from the Army the couple began farming southeast of Paullina where they farmed for many years. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 1992, in Cherokee, Iowa. Shirley remained on the family farm until the fall of 1993, when she moved west of Sutherland, Iowa. She made her home there until 2013, when she moved to the Sutherland Care Center. Shirley passed away on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, at the MercyOne Primghar Medical Center, reaching the age of 91 years, 9 months and 6 days.
She was baptized at her parents’ home and was a longtime member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. She served on the Church Council, Kitchen Committee, Altar Committee and Search Committee and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed bowling and gardening. She enjoyed making meals for her boys when they were in the field. Family was very important to Shirley by showing her love to each of them.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Roxann and her husband, Dennis Diehm of Marshalltown, Iowa; two sons, Neil and his wife, Deb Jurgensen of Sutherland, Iowa, and Kent and his wife, Dawn Jurgensen of Larrabee, Iowa; six grandchildren, Amanda Diehm; Jessica (Matt) Harger; Jill Jurgensen (Charlie); Austin Jurgensen (Hannah); Kade Jurgensen (Jasey); Dane Jurgensen (DeLani); one great-grandson, Cooper Lee Jurgensen; one brother William and his wife Cindy Nielsen of Trussville, Alabama; two sisters-in-law, LaVonne Benson of Sutherland, Iowa, and Mabel Jurgensen of Paullina, Iowa; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother, Loren Nielsen.
