Robert Lee was born on May 31, 1938, in Hull, the son of Ed and Francis (Vande Vegte) Van’t Hul. He was raised in Hull and Rock Valley and graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull.

He was united in marriage to Corrine Marlene Vollink on May 26, 1959, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. He and Corrine enjoyed their time at the lake where Bob had served as president of their homeowners’ association. He also liked to tinker in his shop with engines, cars and tractors, and creating stained-glass windows. He valued the time he spent with his family and found joy in helping others through volunteering at Hope Haven’s wheelchair ministry, going on mission projects to Haiti and Mexico, and helping at the Way of the Cross Ministries while wintering in Texas.
