Robert Lee Pollema Sr. was born Dec. 5, 1940, to William and Tena (Vander Werff) Pollema. Along with five brothers who all lived a mile south of Hull.
Robert attended Hull Christian Grammar School through the eighth grade alongside those five brothers. Robert served proudly in the U.S. Army May 1962-April 1964, where he started and completed his high school education. This time was followed by eight years of service in the Army Reserve. After his discharge, he returned to the family farm south of Hull where he worked at the gas station near Perkins Corner.
While in Hull this town “rebel” met the second grade teacher at Hull Christian grade school. She was from Hancock, MN. This teacher stole his heart and on Dec. 29, 1964, he was joined in marriage to Patricia Eleanor Ver Steeg at the Hancock Christian Reformed Church. Brother Vernon officiated.
Robert and Pat settled in Hull and Robert worked in sales and trucking. Later they moved to Sioux Center. He retired from being on the road in 2009.
Robert was a longtime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull and Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. He was currently a member of the United Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed collecting ceramic eagles, grilling, smoking meat and camping. He loved his country and was proud to display the stars and stripes.
Over his career as a trucker, he visited all 50 states and every Canadian province (He was not a fan of Quebec). He loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren, hang out and joke with the family.
In his later years, his pastime was feeding the squirrels and watching the people that passed by their house on Fourth Avenue. His most important role in these final years was being with Pat, taking care of his bride of 57 years.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Pollema of Sioux Center; two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Bob and MaryBeth Pollema of Sioux Center and the Rev. Brent and Karmen Pollema of Holland, MI; five grandchildren, Noah, Micah, Anneka, Isaac and Lydia Pollema; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Betty Pollema of Bakersfield, CA, Wilmar and Betty Pollema of Hull, Dale and Mary Pollema of Rock Valley, Keith and Carol Pollema of Sioux Falls, SD, Wes and Rhonda Pollema of Rock Valley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
