URBANDALE—Gary Dean Schmidt, 77, Urbandale, formerly of Sheldon, died Thursday, May 30, 2019, at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Sheldon.

Gary Dean Schmidt was born on April 1, 1942. Gary’s parents were Russell and Dorothy Schmidt and he has a younger sister, Cheryl. The Schmidt family grew up on a family farm in Audubon County, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan as a mechanic of C-130 cargo planes.

He attended Iowa State University in Ames, majoring in economics and graduating in 1968.

He married Correne Jorgensen on Dec. 7, 1963.

Upon graduation, they moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Gary was a sales man for Wayne Feed. Gary opened up his own feed store in Kimballton, Iowa, in 1971, as well as starting his own farming career.

In 1983, the family moved to northwestern Iowa, where Gary eventually went to work for Link Manufacturing in Sheldon, Iowa. In 2017, Gary and Correne moved to Urbandale, Iowa, to be closer to their grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his ever-loving wife, Correne; children, Clint Schmidt and his wife, Stacie, Grant Schmidt, and Carrie Schmidt; and grandchildren Jennifer (Schmidt) Burns and her husband Jake, Gavin, Carter, Cael, Jaclyn, and Miss Abby.

Gary was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing cards with his friends, teasing his loved ones, and along with Correne, taught his own children respect, honesty and how to be a great parent. He loved his Cubs, a cheeseburger with cheese and onion, and watching Iowa State athletics and old westerns.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor — a charity dear to Gary’s heart.
