Director of nursing at Fellowship Village
INWOOD—Bonnie Huyser has been a nurse at a couple different locations, but the one that she feels most at home with drew her back with fellowship.
Huyser briefly stepped away from Fellowship Village nursing home in Inwood in 2008 for a position at Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center in rural Canton, SD.
She returned to Fellowship Village in 2010.
Huyser started working as a charge nurse at Fellowship Village in 2006 after graduating from Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon with an associate nursing degree.
“I like caring for people, helping them,” she said. “That was my main draw was getting to know people and helping them when they can’t help themselves anymore.
Returning to Fellowship Village was an easy decision.
“I just liked the residents and the environment here,” she said. “The staff just kind of drew me back here,” Huyser said.
Since coming back she has been named Employee of the Year.
Huyser became the director of nursing in 2017. She has about 40 employees that work under her including charge nurses and certified nursing assistants.
“I really enjoy that we are a small facility and our community is involved,” she said. “We have good connections with our residents and their families. Being small, we have a good connection with our staff too. We get to know people. We get to know our residents’ past and what they like and what they didn’t like. Our board of directors here is very good. They’re involved. They want to know what’s going on and they like being involved.”
Huyser keeps busy outside of work as well. She and her husband, Jordan, have four children who are involved in many school activities.
“I’m always attending some kind of activity. The kids are involved in band, basketball, volleyball, football, wrestling — for the younger ones baseball in the summer,” she said. “We like to go camp when it’s nice outside, and family gatherings. All my siblings live within 30 miles of here.”
During the summer, the Huyser family may be found at Lake Pahoja Recreation Area or another nearby camping area.
She is a graduate of West Lyon High School while her husband graduated from Central Lyon High School, but she said there is no rivalry when it comes to their school pride.
