Crossroads Travel Plaza truck stop opens in Sheldon

A new Co-op Gas & Oil location is open at the Crossroads Travel Plaza near the intersection of the Highway 60 expressway and Highway 18. A Godfather’s Pizza Express location is opening inside the convenience store.

SHELDON—Buckle up, Sheldon, the long anticipated return of Godfather’s Pizza is just around the corner.

Co-op Gas & Oil of Sioux Center is planning a Thursday opening of its new truck stop in the Crossroads Travel Plaza the northeast corner of the intersection of the Highway 60 expressway and Highway 18 on the east edge of the community.

Besides offering fuel for motorists, the new co-op location will offer a range of dining options in its convenience store, including a Godfather’s Pizza Express.

Sheldon’s former Godfather’s Pizza location closed in February of 2017 after 33 years of dishing delicious dough. The new location will be open mainly for carryout, but the convenience store will have limited seating.

“We do have a little bit of dining, but it’s not a regular full-blown restaurant like what we had before,” said retail specialist Lyn Reekers.

A range of other snacks and meal options will be available at the 6,200-square-foot convenience store, which has a kitchen and will stock a variety of freshly baked foods in addition to other standard convenience fare.

“Eventually we’ll have homemade bakery goods, and we’re going to have homemade sandwiches, things like that,” Reekers said.

Other amenities, including showers and a car wash, will be available for motorists. The facility will open Thursday, but Reekers said convenience store hours, which are 5 a.m.-11 p.m. daily, may be limited for the first few days.

“I don’t know if we’ll be able to keep it open the whole time, until 11 p.m., because we’re still training and doing things like that,” Reekers said. “We’re looking forward to serving Sheldon with great smiling service and we’re ready to go.”

The addition to the Sheldon Crossroads North Business Park has been in the works for over two years, but further expansions to the truck stop are still in the works.

A third dining option is anticipated to open in the spring when a Jimmy John’s location is added to the convenience store. The fast-food chain announced it was eyeing the travel plaza in June and will be a new addition to Sheldon’s dining options.

Additionally, the truck stop eventually will have a more than 8,000-square-foot service center offering tire and automotive services to motorists. Construction for the service center is still underway, but Co-op Gas & Oil general manager Tyler Boone anticipates it will open in January or February.

Co-op Gas & Oil has been part of the Sheldon community since 1924. The Sioux Center-based company also has locations in Boyden and Ireton as well as a gas station and service center in Sheldon on Second Avenue.

While Sheldon is blessed with two Co-op Gas & Oil locations for the time being, that may not last long.

Boone said he is unsure what will happen with the co-op’s Second Avenue location. He previously stated that the co-op may be looking for a buyer with interest in the location but added that nothing has been decided. For the time being, the pumps at that location still will be available for co-op customers who don’t want to drive to the east side of town.
