Tire fire breaks out at De Hoog Dairy

The Sioux Center, Ireton and Rock Valley fire departments responded to a tire fire at De Hoog Dairy six miles west of Sioux Center on Tuesday afternoon, May 12.

IRETON—Three fire departments responded to a pile of tires on fire Tuesday afternoon, May 12.

The call came in at 2:46 p.m. for a fire at 2533 410th St., Ireton, which is the address of De Hoog Dairy Farm LLC about six miles west of Sioux Center, according to a Sioux County property search.

Upon arrival, Sioux Center fire captain Dale Vander Berg said there was “heavy black smoke and flames going straight up due to no wind. Tire side walls used for silage tarps were on fire.”

A light pole next to the tires was also charred but Vander Berg said there was no risk of the fire spreading to other buildings.

The Ireton and Rock Valley fire department assisted the Sioux Center Fire Department with the call. Sioux Center had Engine 2, Engine 3 and its tanker on scene. Ireton had three rigs on scene and Rock Valley came with a tanker.

Water and foam were used to put out the blaze.

There were about 35 firefighters on scene between the three departments, who were on scene for about an hour. the Sioux Center Fire Department in particular had an hour of clean up of hoses, trucks and equipment when they got back to the fire station.

How the fire started was not determined.

No injuries were reported.
