SIOUX CENTER—An 18-year-old Sioux Center resident was arrested Tuesday, April 6, on charges of operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent, speeding, no valid driver’s license and reckless driving.
The arrest of Derek Jacob Lopez stemmed from an officer recognizing Lopez driving a 2013 Ford Fusion about 3:25 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Seventh Street Northeast and knowing he did not have a license, according to the Sioux Center Police Department.
The officer activated his emergency lights and Lopez sped up, reaching speeds in excess of 40 mph through a 25-mph residential zone, according to the incident report.
Lopez zigzagged through town for about five blocks before the officer lost sight of him.
However, Lopez later was located at his residence. He admitted to driving the vehicle and to seeing the emergency lights, according to the incident report.
The registered owner of the vehicle reported she did not give Lopez permission to drive her vehicle.
