LARCHWOOD—A 23-year-old South Dakotan was arrested about 8:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, on a charge of public intoxication.
The arrest of Jayden Lee Van Zee of Freeman, SD, stemmed from an investigation into a report from a rural Larchwood resident that another motorist had rear-ended his vehicle in South Dakota and was chasing him, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
The Larchwood resident later called to say he had arrived home but he had not seen the motorist chasing him drive by so he thought that the vehicle might have broken down.
A deputy found a vehicle matching the description given in a ditch about three miles west of Larchwood and found Van Zee walking just north of the location.
Van Zee smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and glassy eyes.
He said he had not been driving the vehicle and did not know who he was, according to court documents.
