Bear Paw snowshoes

Bear Paw snowshoes

SUTHERLAND—O’Brien County Conservation again offering people the opportunity to construct snowshoes.

A snowshoe-making class has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Prairie Heritage Center southeast of Sutherland. However, orders for materials must be made by Friday, Nov. 15.

The Expedition Kit — which includes traditional wooden frames — comes in three styles: Ojibwa, Huron and Bear Paw. Each kit includes the frame, nylon cording and binding. The material cost is $170.

Another alternative for the snowshoe-making course is the Urban Kit, which includes a modern aluminum frame. The material cost for this type is $95.

Once finished, snowshoes are not only serviceable once winter weather arrives, but they also are an object of beauty.
