ROCK RAPIDS—An 18-year-old Sioux Falls, SD, resident was arrested about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, near Rock Rapids on charges of first-offense operating while under the influence, first-offense possession of a controlled substance — marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The arrest of Dallas James Sontag stemmed from the stop of a 2012 Ford Focus for speeding on Highway 9 at the intersection with Ironwood Avenue, about four miles east of Rock Rapids, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Sontag admitted to having marijuana in his backpack on the front seat, according to the incident report.

A small baggie of marijuana and a marijuana pipe were located in the backpack.

Sontag also said he smoked marijuana daily, the last time being about 11:30 a.m. that day.

He had impaired balance and failed preliminary sobriety tests.
