SHELDON—The 2021 Summer Olympics may be over but Sheldon High School will keep the spirit of the games going with the homecoming theme of “Going for Gold.”
The Sheldon School District will celebration its homecoming starting today through Friday.
Highlights form Homecoming Week include dress-up days, the king and queen coronation on Tuesday night, the annual talent show on Friday followed by the football game Friday night against West Lyon.
“Homecoming is a great way to celebrate what it means to be an Orab,” said Sheldon High School principal Sherrie Zeutenhorst. “I hope the community is able to support the marching band, dance team, cross country, volleyball and football teams this fall to help cheer on the Orabs. We appreciate the support of the football cheerleaders to keep the Orab spirits high.”
- “Hawaiian Day” is the dress-up theme for today when students and staff are asked to wear clothing resembling attire in the Aloha State.
The seventh-grade volleyball team will host Rock Valley that day at 4:15 p.m. and the eighth-grade volleyball team travels to Rock Valley at 4:15 p.m.
The ninth- and 10th-grade football team will be at South O’Brien in Paullina at 5 p.m.
The ninth-grade volleyball team travels to Rock Rapids for a match against Central Lyon at 5:30 p.m.
There also will be East Literacy Night at East Elementary starting at 6 p.m.
- “Country Western Day” is the dress-up theme for Tuesday, Sept. 21, when staff and students are asking to dress up in ranch clothing.
The king and queen coronation is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the high school gym. Retired Sheldon math teacher Chuck Johnson is the guest speaker.
The king candidates are Shane Brouwer, Max Hamill, Joe Kim, Braden Schwartz and Brady Van Meeteren.
Queen candidates are Emma Barwick, Ada Borer, Alexis Crawley, Megan Jager and Maliah Kleinhesselink.
The seventh- and eighth-grade football teams host Cherokee with the seventh-grade game starting at 4:15 p.m. with the eighth-grade game following at 5:15 p.m.
The Sheldon Middle School and High School cross country teams will host a cross country meet at the RiseFest grounds starting at 4:30 p.m.
- “Teacher/Student Flip Day” is the dress-up theme for Wednesday, Sept. 22, when teachers dress like students and students dress like teachers.
There will be an one-hour early out on that day.
- “Throwback Thursday” is the dress-up theme for Thursday, Sept. 23, when staff and students are asked to wear clothing from the past.
The Sheldon High School volleyball teams host George-Little Rock starting at 5:30 p.m. with the ninth-grade match. Junior varsity will be next followed by the varsity team.
Sheldon Middle School and High School cross country teams will be at Sioux Center at Dordt University for a meet starting at 4:30 p.m.
There will be the fifth-grade instrumental display at 7 p.m. at the Sheldon Middle School.
- “Orange and Black” is the final dress-up theme of the week on Friday, Sept. 24, when students and staff are asked to wear the school colors.
High school students will spend much of the day enjoying a variety of activities.
The annual talent show will start at about noon in the auditorium and then there will be a pep assembly for all grades in the high school gym at about 1:05 p.m.
The parade will start at 2:30 p.m. The parade will start from the Sheldon Middle School parking lot and will head south on 23rd Avenue, west on East Sixth Street, north on 19th Avenue, east on East Fourth Street and will conclude at the Sheldon High School parking lot.
The Sheldon High School FFA will host a tailgate supper before the game. This year tickets are being presold and there will be a limited number of tickets available the day of the meal. Curbside to-go will be offered for people who are unable to stay for the game.
The O’Brien County Cattlemen will be cooking the meal, which is a rib-eye sandwich meal for $12 and hot dog meals for $6.

The football game against West Lyon will kick off at 7 p.m.
The Marching Orabs will perform at halftime.
There will be a homecoming dance after the game in the Sheldon High School commons until 11:30 p.m.
Homecoming Week will conclude Saturday, Sept. 25, with the Marching Orabs competing at Starfest Sioux City at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Lil Orab football game will be at 8:30 a.m. at the football field.
The Sheldon High School varsity volleyball team will compete at the Sioux City East tournament starting at 9 a.m.
The Sheldon High School junior varsity volleyball team will compete at a tournament at Western Christian in Hull starting at 9 a.m.
