SHELDON—A 65-year-old Sheldon man was arrested about 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, on a charge of first-offense consumption of alcohol in public place.
The arrest of Samuel Hayden Vernon stemmed from a retired police officer tipping off an Iowa State Patrol trooper about an individual who appeared to have been drinking and was possibly intoxicated.
The trooper approached Vernon inside the west Casey’s in Sheldon, asking him if he was OK as he had blood running down his face from an injury as if he had fallen, according to court records.
Vernon told the trooper that he was “fine.” Vernon then purchased a large bottle of vodka and left.
The trooper got back into his car and noticed Vernon cross the street.
He again approached Vernon and noticed he had bloodshot, watery eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage. He also was slow moving and had difficulty talking, according to court records.
