SIOUX CENTER—A 20-year-old Orange City man was arrested about 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, on charges of first-offense operating while under the influence, reckless driving and failure to use headlamps near Sioux Center.

The arrest of Jadon Robert Vander Waal stemmed from him driving a 1993 Chevrolet C-1500 without headlights and into a ditch on the 4200 mile of Goldfinch Avenue about two miles southeast of Sioux Center, according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Vander Waal said he was attempting to avoid authorities when he saw the patrol cars on the roadway and turned his lights off, according to court documents.

He had the odor of an alcoholic beverage, slurred speech, was unsteady and failed preliminary field sobriety tests.
