ROCK RAPIDS—One person received minor injuries in an accident involving three vehicles about 2:35 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 20, at the intersection of Highway 75 and 210th Street about five miles south of Rock Rapids.

Fifty-seven-year-old Robert Keith Winegarden of Pocahontas was driving a 2007 Peterbilt semi pulling a tanker trailer south on Highway 75 when he failed to brake in a timely manner and struck a 1991 Buick Le Sabre driven by 22-year-old Deland Harkness of Larchwood, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Harkness had been slowing down to a nearly a stop behind a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 17-year-old Lane Isaac Henrichs of Doon, who was stopped facing south, waiting for traffic to pass so he could turn east onto 210th Street.

The semi pushed Harkness’ car into Henrichs’ car.

Harkness had to be extracted from his vehicle by use of mechanical means by the Rock Rapids Fire Department and then transported by the Lyon County Ambulance to Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids.

The two cars were totaled while the semi received an estimated $4,000 damage.
