GEORGE—Another interim superintendent has been hired for the George-Little Rock School District to replace the previous interim superintendent.

The George-Little Rock board of education on Wednesday accepted the resignation of interim superintendent Les Douma and approved the hiring of Pat O’Donnell as the new interim superintendent for the 2019-20 academic year.

Douma was hired as an interim superintendent on July 2, but is unable to continue his duties due to health issues.

“Mr. Douma has set a great foundation for our district in implementing new G-LR principles, which have been shared with staff during the professional development before school started,” said school board president Doug Krull. “We appreciate all Mr. Douma has done for the district while he was at G-LR. We wish him only the best as he enjoys his retirement.”

Douma is a Sheldon native and former Orange City mayor who also served as the superintendent of the Rock Valley School District 1992-97 and the Orange City-based MOC-Floyd Valley School District 1997-2002.

He served as the chief administrator of Area Education Agency 4 and Northwest AEA 2002-07 before starting Douma Consulting Services, which helps school districts search for superintendent candidates.

After reaching out to O’Donnell since he was already on staff, the George-Little Rock school board received a letter of interest for the superintendent position from him.

O’Donnell already serves the George-Little Rock School District in human resources, a position shared with the Boyden-Hull, Harris-Lake Park, Sheldon and Sibley-Ocheyedan school districts.

The George-Little Rock school board voted 5-0 to approve O’Donnell as a full-time superintendent on a 10-month contract of $108,333. He also will continue to fulfill his human resources duties.

O’Donnell previously served as the superintendent of the Sioux Center School District 2002-18.

He also is an adjunct professor of the graduate education program for Dordt University in Sioux Center.

“We are excited to have Pat O’Donnell as the new interim G-LR superintendent,” Krull said. “He has a long history in education and has worked with the G-LR district for the last year, so he is familiar with our district.

“Mr. O’Donnell will bring a wealth of experience and leadership as the G-LR interim superintendent,” he said. “The district appreciates Pat stepping in during this transition period.”

George-Little Rock serves 421 students in prekindergarten-12fth grade.

O’Donnell will begin his duties Sept. 2.
