BOYDEN—The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 39-year-old Boyden man in a house fire.
The sheriff’s office reported that at about 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, it received “a request from a concerned party to check on the welfare” of Daniel Stephen Kaufman at his residence at 809 Sheridan St.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence a short time later they observed heavy smoke inside the home.
They attempted to enter the residence but were unable to because of the heavy smoke.
Fire departments from Boyden and Sheldon were called to the residence.
They extinguished the fire and located Kaufman inside the home.
He later was pronounced dead by the Sioux County medical examiner.
The sheriff’s office initiated an investigation with the assistance of the Sioux County medical examiner and the Iowa State Fire Marshal.
Kaufman was transported to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Criminalistics Laboratory in Ankeny for an autopsy.
The sheriff’s office reported the cause of death has not been positively determined.
A memorial service for Kaufman will be held at a later date although a visitation with family members present will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
