ROCK RAPIDS—A 21-year-old Sioux Falls, SD, man faces several charges in Lyon and Osceola counties following a traffic stop about 12:35 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in Rock Rapids.
The arrest of Jamel Mohammed Alnayed stemmed from the stop of a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe on Highway 75 for Alnayed unnecessarily revving the vehicle’s engine and a faulty brake light, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
The odor of marijuana was detected, and when asked about it, Alnayed provided some marijuana that was in the center console.
A search of the vehicle located a bag containing a small amount of methamphetamine.
When asked about a pipe, Alnayed said he did not have one.
Alnayed provided law enforcement with a name that was found to belong to a white male South Dakotan weighing 400 pounds, according to the incident report. Alnayed is a black/American Indian about half that size.
The vehicle was impounded as Alnayed could provide no ownership documents and no insurance for it. He was arrested on charges of first-offense possession of a controlled substance — methamphetamine and first-offense possession of a controlled substance — marijuana and transported to the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids.
During processing, Alnayed admitted he had lied earlier and produced a glass pipe commonly used for smoking meth with residue in it that he had hidden in his boxers.
Advised that a strip search was going to be conducted, Alnayed then produced a small marijuana joint.
Alnayed also admitted to using meth and marijuana recently.
He then was further charged first-offense operating while under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false identification information, interference with official acts and failure to provide proof of vehicle liability insurance.
Alnayed also was served an Osceola County warrant on charges of first-offense possession of a controlled substance — marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false identification information, fraudulent use of registration and failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way.
The warrants stemmed from the stop 2001Chevrolet S-10 pickup for failing to stop at a stop sign on Fifth Street in Sibley about 2:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26.
The odor of marijuana was detected, and a small amount of marijuana and a homemade bong were found in the vehicle.
Alnayed also gave law enforcement a false name, and the Chevy pickup he was driving had the license plate belonging to a 2020 Ram pickup.
The warrant for his arrest was issued Jan. 20.
Alnayed also was found to be wanted on warrants out of Minnehaha County in South Dakota.
