SIOUX CENTER—The Sioux Center City Council has appointed former city council member Dave Krahling as mayor.
The appointment, approved unanimously, came during the city council meeting Tuesday, June 18, to fill the role left vacant after the death of mayor Dennis Walstra on May 26.
“Obviously, the circumstances under which this has transpired saddens us all and the task of filling in for mayor Walstra is daunting, but being asked is both humbling and affirming and I will do my level best to lead,” said Krahling after being sworn in. “Thank you for your confidence in me to do this and I covet your prayers as we continue this process together of leading the community.”
The council had 60 days to appoint someone to the position or 90 days to hold the special election.
City manager Scott Wynja said with the mayoral seat being up for election in the fall, “it made the most sense to temporarily fill that role.”
Krahling will have to decide in the fall if he wants to run again for the position.
“We’re glad you accepted the offer. It’s much appreciated,” said council member Jamie Van Ravenswaay.
The community still has the option to petition for a special election to be held if unsatisfied with the mayoral appointment.
