SHELDON—The first baby born in 2023 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center happened at about the same time as the start of the first snowstorm of the year.
Joseph Alessandro Paz Montenegro was born at about 1:43 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at Sanford Sheldon as snow was coming down outside of the hospital room.
Oscar Paz Corado, 43, the father, said the Sheldon couple was able to make it to Sanford Sheldon OK, but it was snowing, so he had to take it slow. Still, he got Carmen Montenegro Herrera to the hospital to give birth to their fourth child, Joseph.
Montenegro Herrera, 31, said Joseph was named after a family friend.
Being the first baby born in 2023 at Sanford Sheldon earned Joseph and his parents a variable prize package which includes a free 4-ounce jar of Plender’s diaper ointment from Dutch Mill in Orange City, a free baby bib or Sheldon Orab onesie from Top Notch Stitching in Sheldon and a free first haircut and a Baby Don’t Cry bottle of shampoo from Impressions Salon in Sheldon.
Other non-baby items in the prize package includes a free oil change from Rosenboom Frame & Body in Sheldon, a $25 gift card from Ashton State Bank, a $10 gift certificate from Langer’s Bar & Grill in Sheldon and a free heating, ventilation and air conditioner inspection from Fred’s Plumbing & Heating in Hospers.
“It’s very nice, and they are treating us very nice,” Montenegro Herrera said.
The couple has been married for four years.
