SHELDON—Free tax assistance is available is available for qualified individuals through Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon for the 17th consecutive year.
The Sheldon Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site is officially open in Room B of Building B on the NCC campus.
Trained, IRS-certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities, limited English-speaking taxpayers and the elderly who need assistance.
Clients will be scheduled for an initial 15-minute intake/interview appointment, which will be followed up with a separate 15-minute final review/outtake appointment.
The appointment schedule includes various time slots available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout February and March and the first week in April.
People are encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible as times fill up quickly.

Student volunteers will return phone calls only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings as they are limited to their scheduled classes.
Upon scheduling an appointment, a confirmation postcard along with a list of what to bring will be mailed to you.
Income tax appointments will not be scheduled during NCC’s spring break March 2-6.
NCC classes also will not be in session on Monday, Feb. 17, or Friday, Feb. 28.
In the event of inclement weather, tax appointments may need to be rescheduled.
The 23 volunteers this year consist of students and NCC graduates from the college’s administrative office assistant and accounting programs.
Instructors Sheila Drenkow and Janet Boone are serving as the VITA site coordinators.
Volunteers e-filed 288 income tax returns last year.
