HAWARDEN—A 50-year-old Hawarden man was arrested about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, on charges of first-offense operating while under the influence, possession of an open container of alcohol as a driver and failure to maintain control.

The arrest of Mark John Kruid stemmed from a motor vehicle crash about four miles east of Hawarden, according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Kruid was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox south on Coolidge Avenue when he crossed Highway 10, lost control of his vehicle and entered the southeast ditch.

He was found by a passer-by.

No injuries were reported, but Kruid had bloodshot, watery eyes; slurred speech; impaired balance and the odor of an alcoholic beverage and failed preliminary sobriety tests.

Kruid admitted to consuming alcohol and an open container of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky was found in the center console of the vehicle, according to the incident report.

His vehicle received an estimated $2,500 damage.
