Their parents’ garden on their farm near Clarksville is where Carol Kean has some of the best memories of her sister, Julia Benning, from growing up. “Gone Cold: Exploring Iowa’s unsolved murders” is a yearlong collaborative effort by Iowa news organizations to revisit some of the most brutal and mystifying homicides in the state’s history. The N’West Iowa REVIEW is presenting some of the unsolved homicides in the hope that it will lead to new tips and potentially help solve cases. The Sept. 19 issue of The REVIEW features the case of Julia Benning, an 18-year-old from Clarksville who disappeared on Nov. 28, 1975, and was found dead five months later, stuffed in a culvert in rural Butler County. She had been strangled.
