Rose Burkert and Roger Atkison

“Gone Cold: Exploring Iowa’s unsolved murders” is a yearlong collaborative effort by Iowa news organizations to revisit some of the most brutal and mystifying homicides in the state’s history. The N’West Iowa REVIEW is presenting some of the unsolved homicides in the hope that it will lead to new tips and potentially help solve cases. The Nov. 7 issue of The REVIEW features the case of Rose Burkert, 22, and Roger Atkison, 32, both of St. Joseph, MO, who were brutally slain in a motel room at the Amana Holiday Inn near Williamsburg on Sept. 12, 1980. A motel housekeeper discovered the bodies about 1 p.m. Saturday when the occupants missed the noon checkout deadline.
