SHELDON—A fire that started in a tractor also damaged a hog barn next it northeast of Sheldon on Friday evening, Oct. 26.

The Sheldon Fire Co. was called about 7:15 p.m. for a report of a tractor on fire to 2768 Highway 60 expressway about four miles northeast of Sheldon.

On arrival, firefighters found the tractor was fully engulfed in flames and a hog barn next to the tractor also on fire, according to Sheldon Fire Co. assistant fire chief Randy Harms Randy Harms.

There were no hogs in the building.

The tractor, a 1994 John Deere 7800 owned by Chris Van Berkeley, was valued at $39,000.

The hog barn received an estimated $10,000 damage.

Firefighters were on the scene about three and one-half hours.

The Sheldon Emergency Management Agency also was called for traffic control.

The Ashton Fire Department also was called by a passing motorist.
