Sheldon Skate Park

The Sheldon Police Department was called out to the Sheldon Skate Park after a body was discovered on Saturday, May 30.

SHELDON—The body of a 20-something Latino man from Sheldon was found near the Sheldon Skate Park on Saturday, May 30, in what authorities are suspecting to be a suicide.

Sheldon police chief Scott Burtch said officers were called out at 6:53 p.m. to the skate park located in the northeast corner of Sheldon City Park where they found the body, which was discovered by kids.

“Through pictures, the family did ID the guy,” Burtch said.

Two eyewitnesses said the body was hanging from a tree.

Because the department still is in the process of notifying family members, Burtch said they are not releasing the name at this time.

Burtch did confirm police received a welfare call in the middle of May about an individual who they think was the same person found at the park.

“Unfortunately, the body was kind of decomposed,” Burtch said.

The body is being transported to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Criminalistics Laboratory in Ankeny for an autopsy. Burtch is not sure how long it will take to get results.

“We will still investigate it and see what they say,” Burtch said.

In addition to the Sheldon Police Department, the Sheldon Fire Co., O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office and O’Brien County Medical Examiner were on the scene.
