HAWARDEN—A 47-year-old Beresford, SD, man was arrested about 5 p.m. Saturday, May 1, near Hawarden on charges of first-offense operating while under the influence, possession of a controlled substance — marijuana — third or subsequent offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain or use safety belts and failure to provide proof of vehicle liability insurance.
The arrest of Jon Odean Schomberg stemmed from the stop of a 1990 Chevrolet Blazer at the intersection of Buchanan Avenue and 460th Street about a mile southeast of Hawarden, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
Schomberg had bloodshot, watery eyes; impaired balance; and the odor of an alcoholic beverage and failed preliminary sobriety tests.
He had a bag of marijuana and a glass pipe in his pants pocket.
Schomberg told the trooper the pipe was for smoking marijuana, he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day and he smokes marijuana daily, according to the incident report.
