Tom Krause

Author Tom Krause, who has contributed to the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book series, will be the featured speaker at the Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation annual luncheon at noon Thursday at the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center.

SHELDON—Tom Krause wants people in Sheldon to know they can make a difference.

That’s the basis of the message the popular author plans to deliver during the Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation annual meeting noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center in Sheldon.

Krause, who is from Kansas City, will be the keynote speaker this year.

“Getting him is a pretty big deal. He’s been speaking for 20 years and is one of the authors of the ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul,’” said Sheldon chamber director Ashley Nordahl. “It should be exciting and it should be a good message to hear.”

Krause is a poet who has been a contributing author to the acclaimed “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series 20 times.

“Chicken Soup for the Soul” was released in the early 1990s and its success led to a number of similar “Chicken Soup for the Soul” titles.

The first book consisted of inspirational true stories about ordinary people’s lives. Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing continues to publish new books each year and has branched out into Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment.

His book “A Teen’s Guide to Not Being Perfect” received an Independent Publisher’s Award in 2010.

Along with writing, Krause was a teacher and coach in the Missouri Public School System for 31 years.

Krause has continued his motivational speaking career and his presentation is call “You Make a Difference!”

“It’s a heartwarming presentation that gives audience members a feeling of appreciation and gratitude for the difference they make in the lives of the people they serve,” Nordahl said.

The presentation is a mix of heartwarming and humorous true stories.

“We’ve gotten a few RSVPs in so it sounds like people are excited to hear from him,” Nordahl said.

It will be the first SCDC annual meeting for Nordahl, who took over as chamber director in November.

The SCDC holds a monthly luncheon but the annual one held at the beginning of the year recaps the events from 2021 by Nordahl and development corporation director Curt Strouth.

“It will be exciting for me to see people I haven’t met face to face yet,” Nordahl said. “I am pretty excited for it.”

The annual luncheon will be catered by Langer’s Bar & Grill in Sheldon. It will serve a club wrap, a mesquite chicken wrap, a cold pasta salad, a cookie and bottled water.

Those who want to attend the SCDC annual luncheon are asked to RSVP by Monday by e-mailing or calling the office at 712-324-2813.
