SIOUX CENTER—A 30-year-old Hull man was arrested about 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, in Sioux Center on a charge of first-offense operating while under the influence.

The arrest of Helgard Michael Vrey stemmed from him being a passenger in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Ibex Avenue about a mile north of Hull, according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Twenty-seven-year-old Johann Meiring Louw of Hull was driving a 2021 Polaris Ranger north when he lost control of the ATV, which entered the west ditch and rolled.

Louw was transported by the Hull Ambulance to Sioux Center Health.

Vrey did not report injuries and was transported to his residence. Due to consumption of alcohol, he was told to stay there and not operate any vehicles.

The ATV was not damaged in the accident.

Deputies suspected that Louw may possibly have been under the influence of alcohol and were at Sioux Center Health conducting that investigation when it was discovered that Vrey drove a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pickup to the hospital, according to the incident report.

Vrey had bloodshot, watery eyes; impaired balance; slurred speech and the odor of an alcoholic beverage.

He was arrested and transported to the Sioux County Jail in Orange City, where he was charged with OWI.

Authorities said charges for Louw are possible pending the investigation.
