Smoke damage only

Hawarden Fire and Rescue were paged to Hillcrest Healthcare in Hawarden Tuesday, July 9 at about 6:10 p.m.

HAWARDEN—At about 6:10 p.m. Hawarden Fire and Rescue and two rigs from the Hawarden Ambulance Association were called to 2121 Avenue L in hawarden which is the local nursing home and assisted living Hillcrest Healthcare and Mica Hill Estates.

According to Hawarden fire chief Duane Schiefen the residents were evacuated upon the departments arrival. No injuries were reported and the source of the fire was a fan.

Also upon arrival the department hooked a large diameter hose to a hydrant and entered the building with full self-contained breathing apparatus to find the source of the smoke.

Schiefen said the fire was extinguished as well when the department arrived on scene by Mike Gray.

Ireton Fire and Rescue were enroute to assist with the fire but came crossed an accident at the corner of K30 and Highway 10 causing them to respond to that call instead.

Schiefen said the department remained on scene for about an hour.

Fire personnel were on scene an hour

Hawarden Fire remained on scene at a fire in Hawarden at the local nursing home and assisted living for an hour before the scene was clear. Only smoke damage was reported and no injuries occurred.

Schiefen also reported the fire caused only smoke damage.
