Businessman Dave Bernstein set to speak at PLAC

Next up in the summer’s “Booze, Books & Business” speaker series at the Pearson Lakes Art Center is Dave Bernstein.

The Sioux City-based Bernstein is the co-owner of State Steel, and co-founder of the city’s annual free summer concert, Saturday in the Park, which consistency draws crowds in the tens of thousands.

He has been influential in major city projects including the renovation of the Orpheum Theatre and development of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Bernstein’s talk, “How to Get Stuff Done,” will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in the art center’s Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.

“Dave is a real leader in the Sioux City area and his family has been coming to the lake since before he was born, so he also has a real passion for the Okoboji area,” said Bob Kirschbaum, CEO of the Pearson Lakes Art Center. “It’s a great time in Okoboji and a perfect topic as leaders and volunteers come together to help make the Lakes an even better place for everyone to visit.”

Previous speakers in the 2019 edition of the series have included Scott Bush, founder of Templeton Rye and Foundry Distilling Company, which recently launched Okoboji Vodka. Tom Gustafson shared stories and showed off his favorite images from his popular drone photography work and “Above Okoboji” photo books. Cristy Clarke Hedgpeth, author of “Okoboji: Over 160 Years of History and Images,” talked about the details behind that book’s publication as well as some of the stories themselves about the history of the Lakes.

Each installment has filled the theater and Kirschbaum expects more of the same.

“We’ve been really excited about the attendance. We’ve had standing room only crowds, so I’d get there early,” Kirschbaum. “Dave will be educating and inspiring us to be leaders for our community.”
