HAWARDEN—The annual Veterans Day Assembly at the West Sioux High School will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the gymnasium. Veteran Charles E. Brunsting of Sioux Center will be the guest speaker.
Brunsting is a Hull native. He was born in the Hull hospital and raised on a farm north of Hull. He went to Lincoln Township country schools until sixth grade when he started at Boyden-Hull School District, graduating in 1967. He continued his education at United Electronics in West Des Moines until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1969. Brunsting was stationed various places in California, Hawaii and Danang, Vietnam. In 1973, he separated from active duty, but continued serving in the Naval Reserves out of Sioux Falls, SD, and did tours on the USS Halsey and Telcom Morocco.
After 10 years in the Naval Reserves, he decided to go back to active duty for 16 more years. Brunsting was stationed at Philadelphia, Norfolk, VA, Boston, Denver, San Diego and Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He served on the USS Oliver Hazard Perry and the USS Lewis B Puller, participating in operations with Panama, Grenada and Desert Storm. Chuck retired from Active Duty in 2000 as a Chief Petty Officer.
He’s retired. He and his wife, Marje, have five married kids and 12 grandchildren.
