Soo Mar Music Club hosts fest in Orange City

Julie Hummel, of Hawarden, took eight students to the 28th annual Multi-Piano Duet Festival on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Orange City. 

HAWARDEN—Julie Hummel of Hawarden has been teaching piano in Hawarden since 1960. She has been a Soo Mar teacher for years and has brought students of hers to the Soo Mar Music Club’s annual multi-piano duet festival every year since.

Soo Mar Music Club is an affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs. This year's event was the 28th year of the festival and was held on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Christ Chapel in Orange City.

Eight of Hummel's students, all from Hawarden, participated. Those students were Alyssa Renken, Emily Kamp, Charity Allen, Ella Wilkison, Tessa Graves, Jessen Graves, Zaron Thonstad and Yelitza Lopez.

The director for the festival was Angela Holt. She is the assistant conductor of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra and director of Instrumental Studies and Musical Education at Northwestern College in Orange City.
